The Italian cruise ship Willem Ruys was built between 1939 and 1947. When it was sold to the Italian Lauro Organization in 1966, it was renamed after the company owner Achille Lauro. After being hijacked by Palestinian warriors (PLO), in October 1985, the blue liner and cruiser made international headlines. Alexander De Croo Why the Best is Yet to Come
A pandemic, a war in Europe and a climate that is getting warmer and warmer; in recent years, Alexander De Croo has had little option but to be a crisis prime minister. Why the best is yet to come radically challenges the doom-laden thinking, nationalist tendencies and destructive negativism that characterise so much of modern politics. Our country is bursting with talent. If we give our people freedom, confidence and...

Hans L.M. Dassen A new philosophy of man & humanism
basic principles
In the 21st century we need a new philosophy as opposed to the old philosophy: a philosophy of man or philosophical anthropology. The importance of a new philosophy of man is that it addresses people all over the world, thus helping us to overcome our differences. And if we look a bit further into the world of the 21st century, we see that the most pressing project will be the search for meaning in the lives of human beings in a globalised world. Following the complete existential deconstruction...

Tourism in transition
Travel tomorrow will be quite different from the tourist industry we know today. As of now, we experience a transition with fundamental changes. How do we build that new system? Which roads lead to sustainable or regenerative travel? What are the tradeoffs and...

Martine F. Delfos Are you listening to me?
communicating with children from four to twelve years old
Hardly any literature exists about having conversations with children. Talking to children is a daily activity for almost everyone. For professionals who work with children it is even an essential activity. Nevertheless we learn little about it in college. Besides the attention given to open question-and-answer sessions, communication with children in general is described. It deals with therapeutic assistance for children and conversations in school in particular. In ‘Are you listening to me?’ Martine...

Youth care under lock and key in the Netherlands
Wards of State: In the Netherlands, minors who have been placed under state supervision or have been removed from their home environment at the order of Youth Care are what we call wards of state. Youth care in the Netherlands is a market that is driven by perverse incentives, as this book makes clear. A market where expansion and money take precedence over the welfare of young people. A world in which truth and the best possible care are not of paramount importance. The research concerns the...
